Carl and his daughter Kirsten came down to Matthews Point Marina to hone their sailing skills. They own a 14 foot daysailer and were looking to find out if a bigger boat was in their future. Both of these two like a good adrenaline rush every now and then so I tried to oblige. We had 12 to 18 knot winds the first day and ran a slight reef in the genoa to help balance the boat. The second day we had to get out early to try and beat some late afternoon thunderstorms that were expected to develop. We were able to squeeze in a good morning of COB drills, heaving to and reefing but had to cut the day short due to the storms. They wanted to concentrate on single-handing the boat, so they each spent time handling all the lines by themselves. We got caught in a shower but were able to get into the dock before the worst of the storms came in. Day three started out dry but no wind, so we practiced mooring drills and anchoring in Mitchell Creek. Then standing turns in the fairway at the marina. During lunch the rain set in [...]

Joel is my first dual certification. He took the ASA 101/103 Combo class and also obtained his US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification. He came down Thursday night and stayed on the Hunter 27 for the weekend. He was joined by Paul and Griff for their 103 course Saturday and Sunday. Joel had some experience on Flying Scot’s on Lake Norman so he was an ideal candidate for the dual certification and an intense ASA 101 Basic Keelboat course. Friday had light winds but we were able to get out of Clubfoot Creek and into the Neuse River for some practice. Saturday, after a short classroom session we headed over to Oriental for lunch. We had to “beat” into the wind to get there which gave them some valuable experience in cruising. During lunch the wind clocked about 150 degrees and we ended up on a close reach all the way back to Matthews Point Marina. They rotated through 30 minute watches and followed a compass course to get us back to home port. We had a few laughs and I think a generally good time was had by all. We ran into Capt. Laurie in Oriental and she entertained us [...]

We are glad to have Capt. Laurie join us at East Carolina Sailing School! She is certified through Coastal Navigation (ASA 105) and has taught for other schools for several years on the Great Lakes and USVI. Welcome aboard Cap’n Laurie! Capt. Laurie: A brief rain shower Saturday afternoon did nothing to curtail the enthusiasm of our three students taking the ASA 101 class in New Bern May 5th and 6th. Brian, Yuan, and Eric all had lots of time to drive and sheet lines in rather breezy conditions. They even saw a need to reef on Sunday. It made for great practice. Despite her nervousness about docking, Yuan did a magnificent job bringing in Why Knot II on Sunday. Lots of practice going around crab pots and markers may have helped ease her concerns. The New Bern Doubletree/Hilton provided a great classroom facility with lots of amenities. We look forward to having Brian and Yuan back soon for ASA 103. Capt. Laurie Sail on__/)__

Our last Bareboat Cruising Class was the first weekend of May. It started out with a little wind and fairly warm. We made it out to South Creek where we anchored for the night. We all took a cool dip in the creek after class but the jelly fish ran us out after a few minutes. We made it down to River Dunes on Saturday just ahead of some severe thunderstorms. We got escorted into Goose creek by a pod of Dolphin which totally distracted the entire class. Love to see the dolphins! Jane had to leave the class Sunday morning and left Charles and Annie to bring the boat back to Washington. We left early and made excellent time with gusts in the 30 knot range we actually saw our SOG (Speed over Ground) reach 7.5 knots under sail alone. We even got boarded by the USCG for a Safety Check.

Our first 101/103 Couple’s Combo started April 27th. John had some experience on sailboats but Leila was brand new to sailing. Friday the weather cooperated quite nicely and we hung out in Clubfoot Creek. Saturday was cloudy and a bit cooler with winds 15 to 20 knots. We reefed the sails and ventured out of Clubfoot Creek into the Neuse River where we were greeted with 2 foot waves. We had a blast. Sunday was even cooler but the winds had died down and we spent the morning in Mitchell Creek anchoring, approaching mooring balls and performing close quarter turns (standing turn) in the marina.
